<![CDATA[Math...like whoa - HPC Homework Help]]>Thu, 18 Apr 2024 21:44:04 -0700Weebly<![CDATA[Pink PC: p.24 #89, 93]]>Sat, 22 Sep 2012 02:56:20 GMThttp://shanhogan.com/hpc-homework-help/pink-pc-p24-89-93right, so before you can do part A or B for either problem, you need to find the slope of the given line...let's start with 89.
89. given line is 3x + 4y = 7. solve for y in order to most easily find the slope and you get y = (-3/4)x + 7/4...so the slope of the GIVEN LINE is m = -3/4
so, for 89A, your slope is m= -3/4 (since parallel means same slope)...so your equation is y - 7/8 = (-3/4)(x + 2/3)
if you want to clean that up to make it slope-intercept then you should get y = (-3/4)x +3/8.
for 89B, your slope is m = 4/3 (since perpendicular means flip slope and change sign)...so your equation is y -7/8 = (4/3)(x + 2/3)
if you want to clean it up to make it slope-intercept form then you should get y = (4/3)x+ 127/9

NOW, number 93 is a special case. x = 5 is a VERTICAL LINE. thus, the parallel line through the given point must ALSO BE VERTICAL. since the point is (2, 5) the vertical line through that point is x = 2. (thus, your answer for 93A is x = 2)...
the perpendicular line to a vertical line is a HORIZONTAL LINE...the horizontal line through the point (2, 5) is the line y =5. thus, your answer to 93B is y =5.
